You Tax Me, Sir!

June 27, 2014

So, they’re raising toll prices next week.  On the paid-off roads from which they said they’d remove the tolls when the roads were paid off.  Those tolls.

When we want to give a pill to one of our dogs, we coat it in peanut butter, or cheese, or bread.  You could give Rainy an entire peanut butter sandwich with a pill the size of a chick pea in it and 30 seconds later the sandwich would be gone and the pill on the floor.

Alas, we can’t do that with taxes.  Congress (state and federal) love to do a shell game with taxes.  Hide some here, hide some there.  Some are hidden as “fees” but are levied by the government, which makes them taxes.  The Lottery is a tax on the poor.  Politicians count on the lack of transparency to keep people from revolting.  They want our money, but they don’t want us to know how much they actually take.  Not counting the Lottery, we pay 97 different taxes and fees. That’s 97 bureaucracies gobbling up large percentages of each pot before passing it up the chain.  Some of these are actually compound taxes (gas tax, for instance has several taxes included).

If we knew the actual tax rate and saw it climbing year over year, might we at some point say, “Enough! Find a way to cut expenses!”?  Wouldn’t knowing how much of our money our representatives were accountable for help us with accountability in voting for them?

You don’t pay each of these, but you pay most of them.  Note, I’m not saying we shouldn’t pay taxes, just that we could save a lot of money by consolidating to a single existing bureaucracy that works very well.  (Okay, maybe keep the sin taxes…)  And let me point out that any of the corporate taxes on this list are passed on to you in product and service prices.

Here’s the list, alphabetical because I’m OCD.  Look ye and despair.
