Gitty up! (If there’s an exclamation point, why isn’t there a de-emphasis point?)

April 9, 2014

There’s a country song by Jo Dee Messina I like.  “My Give a Damn’s Busted.”  I enjoy it because it’s clever (something country music excels at), but mostly because it recognizes there’s more to doing than getting started.

I’ve been told I’m a bad starter.  Clearly not true, because I’ve started dozens of novels and screen plays.  Starting is easy.

Jo Dee realizes there’s an activator to action.  She references one kind; I’d like to suggest another.  Old folks call it “git up and go” (NOT “get up and go”).   Even older folks call it “gumption.”

Roll that on your tongue.  Gumption.

It’s not cheeks in seats, it’s getting your cheeks from wherever they ARE to getting ’em in the seat.

I struggle with gumption. It isn’t discipline or motivation.  It’s gumption.  Goin’ isn’t the problem, gettin’ up is tough.  Deadlines or money help.  They put the fizz in gumption.  Gumption without fizz is flat.  It practically isn’t gumption, it’s nope-tion.

Reclaiming Gumption’s Fizz…   sounds like a book idea.

Ah, maybe someday.
