Binders and Equal Pay for Women

October 22, 2012

I don’t get the whole “binders full of women” outrage.  One friend said it had to do with an S&M practice or paraphernalia, but I don’t think that’s it.

Another explanation was that it’s horrible that Romney had to make a special effort to find qualified women.  Well, it sounds like his search team had a problem and Romney didn’t like it so requested women be included.  He wanted to make sure they were well represented so he went to women’s groups to round the selection out.  The horrors!  The Democrats say qualified women are all over the place.  Duh.  Seems Romney made an effort to go beyond the good-old-girl network to find fresh blood.  Evil man.  Talk about a trumped up issue.

Others were horrified that he equated flex time with being able to get home to cook dinner for the family.  OK, I know we’re supposed to wink-wink-nudge-nudge that women don’t actually cook for their family, but I think most do.  Or at least grab some take out on the way home.  Is it somehow demeaning to think women want to take care of their family, or is it demeaning that he thinks they have families?

Also, I love how the whole Equal Pay for Women morphed away from Equal Pay for Equal Work.  I work with several women and two make less, one probably makes more.  I’m more experienced and skilled, so it makes sense.  I don’t want an Equal Pay for Women law.   Even Equal Pay for Equal Work is blurry.  If performance is poor due to missed work or lower skill set, there should be a ding there.  Laws need defensible wiggle-room because all circumstance are not the same.

Silly stuff.  Let’s treat people like people, not chattel for bonus points.

When you are looking for some word or phrase to jump on, you’ll find it, and that goes for both sides of the political debate. Unfortunately that’s a bigger problem than ever since no word goes unrecorded today – things are blown way out of proportion. It speaks volumes that this is one of the things that people have had a problem with since there is really nothing behind such a statement other than his trying to place qualified women in positions in his administration.
