Teresa Jacobs: Now That’s What I’m Talking About!

February 26, 2012

I’ve said before that I favor legal contracts that aren’t based on sex but would open critical decision to people who want them, not just who are living together.

WhenOrlandopassed an ordinance about a Domestic Registry for gay couples, I shrugged.  Okay, whatever.

Then Mayor Teresa Jacobs expressed concerns and nowOrangeCountywants to open the registry, which gives end-of-life and medical decisioning to partners, to anyone you want to give it to, which makes tons of sense.  My sister lives alone; why shouldn’t she be able to quickly and easily register someone as her decisioning agent? (Okay, she lives inMt.Vernon, notOrangeCounty, but you get the idea.)

Hats off to Mayor Jacobs, who realizes there’s no such thing as “gay” rights, just human rights.  May her plan be used as template for other counties acrossAmerica.  Isn’t it amazing when you concentrate on all people, everyone benefits?
